Mahnomen County is a county located in the state of Minnesota. As of 2000, the population is 5,190. Its county seat is Glencoe6.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,510 km² (583 mi²). 1,440 km² (556 mi²) of it is land and 70 km² (27 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.61% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 5,190 people, 1,969 households, and 1,366 families residing in the county. The population density is 4/km² (9/mi²). There are 2,700 housing units at an average density of 2/km² (5/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 62.85% White, 0.13% Black or African American, 28.55% Native American, 0.06% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.31% from other races, and 8.09% from two or more races. 0.89% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,969 households out of which 32.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.60% are married couples living together, 11.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.60% are non-families. 27.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.60 and the average family size is 3.14.

In the county the population is spread out with 29.20% under the age of 18, 7.20% from 18 to 24, 23.50% from 25 to 44, 23.40% from 45 to 64, and 16.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 102.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.40 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $30,053, and the median income for a family is $35,500. Males have a median income of $23,614 versus $21,000 for females. The per capita income for the county is $13,438. 16.70% of the population and 11.80% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 21.30% of those under the age of 18 and 15.30% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
